To everyone out there, both new and familiar, welcome to my first all encompassing website! This will be the place to get all the information you need about what projects I am involved with now, as well as those from the past.
Please bear with me, as this site is still under construction, but at least allow me to give you the basic rundown: My name is Jon Bafus, and i have been learning music and making art since i was very young. I am primarily a percussionist, but also fancy myself a keyboard player as well as a general dabbler of instruments. I first started performing for people in junior high, in both "school band" and "rock band" contexts. Between then and now, my passion for drumming and music in general has only grown exponentially, and continues to do so. I have played in a number of different projects, (some lesser known and short-lived than others) including but not limited to Afternoon Brother, Sholi, Mucky the Ducky, Invasive Species, Appetite, Good News Bears, Sol+Jon, Instagon, Genetic Makeup, and a number of "looser" improvised ventures.
My "solo" music, meaning music which i write and record alone, has gone by the name "gentleman Surfer" since the "release" of my first 8-track excursion in late 2006 entitled "Thanksgiving with the Gentleman Surfer." Over the next year I made my first "digital" collection of songs and sound collages entitled "Tales From The Clipped." Both of these were only available in very small hand-made batches.
The newest album is "Bountiful Ore" recorded in late 2010, and made available in November 2011 by ARECORD arts. Bountiful Ore is a collection of short instrumental soundtracks, written over 2010 in a studio apartment. Then recorded by Andy Morin at A2B2 Studio in Sacramento, and Mastered by Eric Ruud.
That being said, the first Gentleman Surfer "band" is now fully functional, just having played our first show on 11/11/11. Naturally the band is being called "GentlemEn Surfer" rather than the singular "GentlemAn." Please note this distinction. "Surfer" shall remain the same however. Plans to record a "proper" album within the band context are already in the works, so if you are digging the raw live thing that we are doing, over my carnival-esque solo versions, or even if you want a little of both, that will become a reality over the next few months.
Lastly, I will be Touring this March with the band Appetite, playing drums. They are a great band, headed by my long time friend Teddy Briggs, and I am very excited about the whole thing. We will making a bunch of stops including Austin for SXSW, So I hope to see both old and new friends along the way. You can find more about that at http://appetitemuch.com/.
Please be patient while more information on past projects, and more music, merchandise, and visual art are made available on this site!
That's about it for now, please don't hesitate to contact me with whatever questions or interests you have!
